El teatro de los niños (The children's theatre)

In 1915, the publishing house Seix Barral released what would become the most popular toy theatre, which also had an important educational aspect: "El teatro de los niños" (The children's theatre). This theatre, with the CC model shown here, won the prize awarded by the Society for the Promotion of Decorative Arts, during the 3rd Toy Exhibition held in Barcelona in June 1917 and, thanks to its success, it was produced for many more years to come. The theatre appears as one of the producer's most significant pieces in the 1919 Seix Barral catalogue and was sold at the time for 10 pesetas.

In addition to the miniature theatres, plays could be bought separately for them. Seix Barral published 27 works, including The Taming of the Shrew and La ciencia más que el poder (Science Over Power). As well as the booklet on the play, the characters and the required scenery were also included.

This miniature theatre belonged to the poet, playwright and plastic artist Joan Brossa, and has his signature on it. For stage director Hermann Bonnín, it is the "miniature theatre, with the sets and characters, of the Brossa boy. A tiny stage that contains universes of lies that the poet Joan Brossa was to transform into spaces of freedom, of poetry".
