Kokeshi are traditional dolls from the Tōhoku region in the north of Japan: they are made of solid wood turned by hand and decorated very delicately. They are characterised by their rounded heads with the facial features marked by just a few lines, and by their body in the form of a simple trunk, with no representation of arms or legs. The base normally bears the signature of the maker.
In this area we exhibit a selection of the kokeshi of the Museum’s collection.
