Bishop Pere Casaldàliga has been one of the most outstanding personalities of the theology of liberation and a key figure in the defence of the rights of the poorest and most disfavoured people of Brazil, for which reason he has become a universal reference in the defence of human rights.
This toy exemplifies his commitment to the land that has welcomed him, the Mato Grosso. It is a wooden seat made by the indigenous Karajá people, who live beside the River Araguaia. On the occasion of donating it to the Museum in 2003, Casaldàliga left a brief handwritten reflection accompanying the piece: “The adults sit down to hold a meeting and not understand each other. The little ones understand each other and sit down to play.”
