THE CAGANER

The caganer is the most popular Nativity scene figure in Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. When included in a Nativity scene, it is thought to bring wealth and luck, and is usually placed slightly out of sight so that guests and visitors can try to find it. The caganer symbolises prosperity, as he is fertilising the earth in the Nativity scene.

Nowadays, caganers are made to resemble politicians, sports personalities and well-known people or celebrities, although the countryman remains the most popular version.

The Museum collection includes original caganers sculpted by Guillem Duran that are not only relieving themselves, but also have toothache. The caganer with the Museum’s emblem - the spinning top - by David Ventura and Neus Hosta is also worthy of note.
