ANIMALS

Domestic, exotic or wild; small, medium-sized or large: people have always been strongly attracted to toy animals.

Fantastic new specimens are often created: the toys barely resemble the real-life animals in their natural habitat, and in most cases their facial expressions have been exaggerated and their colours changed.

There are several horses among the toys in this collection. This toy was highly popular among children in the Middle Ages, and not only provided fun, but also had an educational aspect that helped to prepare them for adult life. Over time, wood gave way to other materials, such as papier mâché. Two of the horses that are displayed here have rather well-known owners: one belonged to historian and ex-Minister of Health Ernest Lluch; the other was owned by Catalan artist Joan Brossa and is seen in an image next to him.
